Sedated Grooming in Spartanburg: A Calmer, Safer Way to Care for Fearful Pets

At Pets Favorite Vet and Play Place in Spartanburg, SC, we know that not every pet finds grooming relaxing. In fact, for some dogs and cats, grooming can trigger intense fear, anxiety, or even panic. That’s why we offer sedated grooming—a compassionate, veterinarian-supervised option that makes grooming safer and more comfortable for fearful, anxious, or aggressive pets.
Why Sedated Grooming?
Pets that need sedated grooming often haven’t been groomed in quite a while. Many come in with severe matting, overgrown nails, or excessive shedding—but it’s not just about their appearance. Matted fur can be painful and lead to skin infections, while untrimmed nails can affect mobility. Still, when fear and stress make grooming impossible, it’s not the pet’s fault. That’s where calming, sedated care comes in.
How It Works
Our sedated grooming program is designed with your pet’s emotional and physical well-being in mind. It typically begins with a fully sedated session using injectable sedation. This allows our team to safely and thoroughly groom your pet—removing mats, trimming nails, and getting them to a healthy starting point.
For this first visit, we do not perform a bath, as sedated pets are prone to getting cold during the drying process. Instead, we focus on comfort, safety, and essential grooming tasks.
From there, we schedule a follow-up grooming appointment relatively soon after, using only oral calming medications. The goal is to slowly reintroduce your pet to grooming in a gentle, fear-free way, helping them learn that grooming doesn’t have to be scary. Over time, we may be able to reduce or even eliminate the need for sedation altogether.
Who Can Benefit from Sedated Grooming?
Sedated grooming is ideal for:
- Fearful pets who panic during brushing, nail trims, or baths
- Pets with a history of trauma or aggression during grooming
- Cats or dogs with severe matting or impacted undercoats
- Older pets or those with mobility issues who find grooming painful
- Heavy shedders who can’t tolerate the brushing they need
We offer sedated grooming for both dogs and cats, provided they meet a few basic requirements. Dogs must be up to date on vaccines and have a negative heartworm test within the past year. All pets must be current on vaccinations to ensure a safe environment for everyone.
