Associate Veterinarian

Are you looking for a committed, on-site mentor in an independently-owned small animal practice? What about a practice where you get to be the doctor and not a high-paid assistant? A real commitment to work/life balance?

Pet’s Favorite Play Place is looking for a new graduate to join our practice as an associate. Salary starts at $100,000 + loan assistance and a relocation/signing bonus. There is a quarterly profit share bonus and buy-in potential.

Mentorship Plans

A mentorship plan will be customized to the needs and goals of the mentee, but the following is an outline of what it could look like.

Sample Mentorship Plan

Week 1:

  • Shadow mentor vet, lead tech, and CSRs
  • Records system training and workflow observation
  • See drop-off patients and create records and diagnostic/treatment plans in partnership with your mentor

Month 1:

  • Extended appointment times
  • Dedicated mentor time at the end of each day for case review and clinical efficiency tips
  • Another vet is ALWAYS in the building
  • Scrub in with mentor for surgery

Months 2 & 3:

  • Weekly, hour-long session with your mentor to discuss cases, efficiency, communication, team management, etc.
  • Surgery day as primary surgeon once a week with your mentor available to scrub in, progressing to independence with experience and comfort
  • Standard appointment lengths by the end of month three

Months 4-6:

  • May now be the only doctor in the building with your mentor available via phone
  • Mentor meetings continue or decrease to biweekly as needed for the remainder of the year

Month 9:

  • Review production for months 6-9 and discuss ways to ethically increase if below what is needed for mentees desired raise at anniversary

End of first year:

  • Review production for months 9-12 and raise the mentee’s total compensation package to 20% of production
  • Reflect on areas of special interest and the clinic’s need to plan additional training/CE and clinic equipment purchases

End of second year:

  • Discuss long-term plans and goals. If ownership is desired, the associate can begin earning sweat equity in a location of Pet’s Favorite Play Place
  • More training on management of support team
  • More specialized training in areas of interest
